Neck Pain from Excessive Gaming

It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re fully immersed in a video game. Before you know it, hours have gone by and you’ve been sitting in the same position staring at a screen. This long duration of poor posture while gaming can lead to a stiff and painful neck.

When you play games for extended periods, you tend to hunch over your device with your neck bent forward. Holding this position for a long time strains the muscles and soft tissues in your neck. The muscles have to work harder to support your head which typically weighs 10 to 12 pounds. This sustained contraction causes muscle fatigue and spasms that feel like neck tightness and soreness.

The neck pain can range from mild to severe depending on factors like your posture, genetics, age, and fitness level. Some people may only experience temporary soreness while others are plagued by more persistent, chronic pain. The discomfort is often felt at the back of the neck but can radiate to the shoulders and upper back. Twisting or turning the neck may make the pain worse.

One of the most common causes of pain is strained neck muscles. When the neck muscles stay contracted to hold up the head during gaming marathons, it places excessive tension on the muscles, tendons and ligaments. This can result in myofascial pain syndrome which feels like hard, rope-like bands in the neck and shoulders that produce local or referred pain.

Every 30 minutes, look away from the screen and move your neck gently in all directions. Keep your gaming area ergonomic with your monitor at eye-level and your chair supporting proper posture. If possible, invest in a laptop stand to avoid slouching over a low screen. Stay fit and active to reduce neck muscle tension. Applying ice packs helps ease soreness as well.

If neck pain persists for over a week or causes severe pain, numbness or loss of coordination in hands, consult a physical therapist. They can assess any underlying conditions and provide treatments like therapeutic exercises, soft tissue mobilization or joint adjustments to relieve pain and improve mobility. Learning proper neck and shoulder stretches and strengthening exercises will also help take strain off the overworked muscles. Maintaining good posture and limiting gaming duration can help prevent recurring neck issues.
